According to the National Science Foundation, Nebraska spent $320 million on research and development in 2020. Nebraska is considered to have "very high research activity" based on the Carnegie Classification. The school also offers programs through the University of Nebraska Omaha College of Public Affairs and Community Service, the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry and College of Nursing, and the Peter Kiewit Institute, which is managed in partnership with the Kiewit Corporation. UNL offers over two hundred degrees across its undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The university is organized into nine colleges: Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Sciences, Engineering, Fine and Performing Arts, Journalism and Mass Communications, and Law. The university has been governed by the Board of Regents since 1871, whose members are elected by district to six-year terms. It is the state's oldest university and the flagship institution of the state-wide system. Chartered in 1869 by the Nebraska Legislature as part of the Morrill Act of 1862, the school was known as the University of Nebraska until 1968, when it absorbed the Municipal University of Omaha to form the University of Nebraska system. There are three important components in the membership intake process for CBFOs and BGLOs.The University of Nebraska–Lincoln ( Nebraska or UNL) is a public land-grant research university in Lincoln, Nebraska, United States. The goal of membership intake is to recruit, long-term, effective leaders into the chapter that will promote the building of a strong presence on a universities campus. Each organization looks for specific qualifications in candidates that they must obtain before the application process begins. Each MGC and NPHC organization has a different Intake Process which is generally determined by their national corporate office. These chapter are a part of the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) or National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Intake is a process in which students interested in a specific Culturally-Based Fraternities Organization (CBFO) and Black Greek Letter Organization (BGLO) go through to obtain membership. However, all CBFOs and BGLOs require interested students to be at least a second-semester freshman enrolled at UNL with a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average. Culturally-Based Fraternities Organizations (CBFOs) and Black Greek Letter Organization (BGLOs) have open recruitment periods that are determined by each organization and have specific requirements that vary by organization. Most students joining Interfraternity Council fraternities and Panhellenic Association sororities will join before taking their first class. First-year students interested in joining Panhellenic sororities are required to live in a University residence hall, but may join a chapter during primary recruitment which occurs the week before classes begin. First-year men have the option of living in a fraternity chapter house if the facility is a part of University Approved Housing. IFC fraternities, especially those with living units, begin recruiting students in mid-May. There are opportunities for students to join Greek-letter organizations immediately.
